About

I’ve been in the room. At 2 a.m. With a family who just lost someone.

John Moelker — pastor, software engineer, and founder of FuneralWiseAI

John Moelker — Pastor · Engineer · Founder

Before I was a software engineer, I was a pastor for fifteen years. That meant hospital chaplaincy, grief support groups, and — yes — being the person families called when someone died. Not to schedule anything. To be present.

I spent years training as a Stephen Leader and going through Clinical Pastoral Education — the framework that trains hospital chaplains, hospice workers, and crisis counselors. CPE is not about what to say. It is about how to listen when someone is too overwhelmed to organize their grief into sentences.

When I transitioned to software engineering, I brought that background with me. I know what it costs a family when the first voice they hear — in the hours after a death — is a voicemail prompt. I built FuneralWiseAI because I knew this could be done better. Not just automated. Actually done better.

The HEAR protocol built into every FuneralWiseAI call is not a marketing term. It is the same framework I learned in a hospital room. Hear the person. Empathize before you move. Advance at their pace. Respond with what they actually need. It is how trained care professionals listen. It is how an AI can listen, too — if you build it the right way.

I did not build a phone tree. I built an agent that takes grief seriously. There is a difference. Funeral directors who have used it can tell the difference. The families who have called at 2 a.m. and been heard — they certainly can.

Why pastor-built matters

The training behind the technology.

The HEAR protocol did not come from a product specification. It came from clinical training and fifteen years of sitting with people in their hardest moments. That background is not incidental to FuneralWiseAI. It is the entire reason it works.

Clinical Pastoral Education

Seminary-level training in hospital and crisis chaplaincy. Includes direct work with families in acute grief.

Stephen Leader Trainer

Trained and supervised volunteer care ministers for over a decade. The Stephen model is structured empathetic care — the same discipline behind HEAR.

15 years in pastoral ministry

Funerals, hospitals, grief support groups, crisis response. Not as a bystander — as the person the family called first.

15 years in software engineering

Production systems, API design, distributed architecture. Now building the platform that brings care and code together.

Mission

A portion of every subscription funds our mission work.

ChurchWiseAI LTD (the parent company) funds free AI tools for churches and Christian ministries that cannot afford commercial pricing. FuneralWiseAI subscriptions support that mission directly. If you are buying this because it solves a real problem for your funeral home, you are also helping a small rural church answer their calls. Learn more →
